Cut-down MWKN issue

Apologies for this cut-down issue of MWKN. There are two reasons:

1) Twitter's authentication changes caught us whilst we weren't prepared. The appropriate scripts for news gathering and publishing need updating to use "OAuth".

2) One of your editors is currently enjoying the delights of LegoLand. Next week's issue will contain everything that should have been published here.

Less than a week to declare your candidacy for the Maemo Community Council election

Nominations for the next Maemo Community council will be accepted until 23:59 on Wednesday, 8th September. Nominate yourself, or someone else, soon if you'd like to help steer the transition of the Maemo community to MeeGo. Dave Neary says: So far, only one person has nominated themselves. We typically get a number of nominations on the last day, but I would encourage people to announce early to avoid the rush. As a tiny extra incentive, I plan to list the candidates in order of their nomination on the voting page this year. The next 6 months will, perhaps, be the most important in determining the future of both maemo.org and MeeGo. maemo.org will need to figure out where it fits in the picture that MeeGo, MeeGo-Harmattan, and Maemo's legacy position as a community-supported platform. The next council will be in a unique position to help smooth this transition and influence the direction of both the Maemo Community and MeeGo moving forward.

Applications

Macuco2 is in Extras-testing: use web pages that are optimised for iPhone

Macuco2 is a Qt-based browser application that pretends to be an iPhone. The original has now been picked up by Felipe Crochik, who describes the new version: Macuco can do much more than access your gmail account, it can give you access to many other web sites optimized for the iphone (google, facebook, twitter, cnn, ...). It is not supposed to replace your current web browser but some times you don't want to see the web site on the n900 like you do on your desktop just because you can! Most web sites optimized for the iphone will give you instant (or quicker) access to the real information you are looking for without many distractions. As it's in Extras-testing, usual caveats apply.

Development

Developing MeeGo Touch Framework apps in Ubuntu

Ville Vainio has posted a blog article on Forum Nokia describing how to use his MTF packages for Ubuntu to run such apps on your Ubuntu desktops. If you (too) are interested in kicking the tires of MeeGo Touch (with the eye on porting over an existing app, or beginning a new one), the easiest way is to run it on Ubuntu Lucid from my PPA. This should make development, and getting started with MeeGo's touch API, much easier.

Cheaper rooms available at MeeGo conference hotel

For those of you not applying for sponsorship to the MeeGo Conference in November, Amy Leeland has announced that they've managed to negotiate a set of rooms starting from 69 euros: We were able to do some negotiating with the official conference hotel and are now able to offer 25 rooms at 69€. When these rooms are taken, we will offer an additional 25 rooms at 89€! When they're gone, they're gone, so book your room as soon as possible.

Devices

Jailbreak your PS3 with Maemo

The Australian company OzModChips, who received an injunction against the sale of their PS3-jailbreaking USB keys has, unfortunately, been delivered the death blow by the FOSS PSFreedom driver, which will allow you to use Linux devices with USB to jailbreak your PS3 (it's only been ported to the N900 and Pre so far, though). Working closely with the PSGroove team, hacker Kakaroto adapted the same jailbreak to the Nokia N900, and the open-source community lost no time porting it to the Palm Pre as well. If the videos after the break are any indication, both versions work just as well as the original, and you too can get your game on with downloads and detailed instructions at the source links below. Engadget has all of the relevant links listed at the end of their article.
