Android ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) gets alpha release for Nokia N9

Via: @jaffa2

allboutn9 summarises the progress made so far on getting Android running on the N9: Those who don't want to be limited to MeeGo might soon have a very well running port of Android ICS ("Ice Cream Sandwich") called NITDroid which allows to use two systems on the N9 with dual-boot.

NitDroid might always remain a project which is rather dedicated to experimental users. But it's very impressive to see what the N9 is able to do and why not having two platforms on one phone than buying two different devices? The recent Alpha-version shows that the port was successful. Many drivers for the N9 were found and basic tasks are already possible.

Extraplugins for additional IM accounts on N9 removed from Nokia Store

"coderus", the developer behind the "Extraplugins" package which provided chat for ICQ, AOL, MSN, Jabber, QIP, Yahoo, Vkontakte, Odnoklassniki, Gadu-Gadu services has been taken out of the Nokia Store: Developing stopped due to problems with Ovi Publish. So, i had 15000 downloads, all was fine, but now i should remake package, move a lot of *so libraries in /opt folder and do some MAGIC to make it work outside normal /usr/lib place just for Ovi. No, thanks. I'm off.

The problem seems to simply one of packaging, meaning it should be an easy situation to resolve. A direct link is also provided.

Importing OPML files into N9 feed reader

Via: @jaffa2

Simón Pena Placer describes the (somewhat involved) process for importing an OPML file (an index of feeds) into the N9's feed reader app: As you know (and it's already reported), there's currently no way to import an OPML into the Nokia N9 Feed Reader application (see Harmattan Bug #159). However, I noticed that when you open a feed link with the built-in browser, it launches the Feed Reader app, and asks you to subscribe to the feed. I guessed that it was communicating with the Feed Reader using D-Bus, so I dbus-monitored it, and that's what I found

Another review for Firewall+ - a call & SMS blocker for N9

Via: @jaffa2

everythingn9.com has posted an extensive review for Matt Lee's Firewall+ Pro which, despite the somewhat cumbersome name, is a call and sms blocker app. It was written by Matt Lee or I32606 on the maemo.org forums. Firewall+ Pro uses blacklists to block calls and whitelists to allow calls to go through. I tested this in the US for those that want a call blocking app without a restraining order, it works. The application is written very clearly, there are no lags, or hiccups, it works like a charm. The review's only negative point is about the rather high price (compared with other apps for Harmattan). However, as numerous online comics point out, it's cheaper than a cup of coffee or a trip to the movies.

Smoke the Bugs game in pure QML in Nokia Store for N9 and Symbian

Via: @jaffa2, @timsamoff

Kaj Grönholm announces his new game in which ones uses a magnifying glass to burn insects crawling across your screen: Smoke the Bugs is now available to download from Nokia Store for Harmattan N9 and for Anna/Belle. No bugs (except software bugs!) were harmed while developing the game. [...] As explained here earlier, this was partly an expedition on making a game with pure QML + JavaScript + shader effects. Plan was to make it totally without C++ (excluding the launcher which Qt SDK generates automatically) and to see what the outcome would be.
