Maemo Community Council meeting, 17th April @ 15:00 UTC

Via: @Jaffa2

RM Bauer has announced a new Maemo Community Council meeting, tomorrow (Tuesday) at 15:00 UTC: Preliminary Agenda:Welcome (back) to Quim Gil/Update from Nokia(?); Community OBS; Council Election voting; Left-over topics from last council meeting (if timely):Qt style license agreement for maemo; Co-maintainership for CSSU repo. The discussion continued to try and define what a "Qt style license agreement for maemo" meant, as there have been various different suggestions. The conclusion was that it was a grant of a licence for maemo.org to continue distributing Nokia binaries for the purposes of the autobuilder, SDKs and firmware images.

How to port Qt 5 to N900 Fremantle

Via: @Jaffa2

After discussion about porting Qt 5 to Fremantle cropped up in the Council Election thread on Talk, Robin Burchell chimed in with some concrete information about the concrete requirements: Getting the basics running on Fremantle would most likely not be that hard, since there is still support for C++98 compilers newer than GCC 4 (I don't know if we require any specific version, I think anything 4.0 or newer will do). A more difficult problem might be whether codebases like V8 will work, but probably not an insurmountable problem. That wouldn't give you platform theming of QWidgets though, because that was rather heavily hacked into Maemo's Qt. It might be possible to resurrect most of it as a style plugin, or perform the same hacks again, though. ...

Latest Harmattan updates plug security hole used by Inception; Inception updated to bypass

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

N9 and N950 owners today received updates to developer-mode and other packages. These apparently fix the MeeGo Security Framework hole which allowed "Inception" to work. Inception is a tool which provides user access to all Harmattan Aegis permissions, without having to flash an "open mode" kernel. On TMO, itsnotabigtruck said, Nokia recently released a series of updates to developer mode packages that prevent use of chroot from unsigned apps. Among other things, this interferes with INCEPTION. As a result, it will no longer be possible to set up INCEPTION with the new updates installed. However, he has since released an update to Inception bypassing the new fixes. Jonni Rainisto points out a downside to the holes remaining unfixed: it's a potential malware vector. This might have been a significant problem if MeeGo was still Nokia's primary high-end platform; but with a user base similar to the N900, that seems less of an issue now, as Fremantle never suffered any malware problems and had no security infrastructure whatsoever.

Replacing housing of Nokia N9

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Ryan Abel

The Nokia N9 (and Lumia 800) are housed in a solid plastic body which essentially snaps onto the core of the phone. This makes it a relatively straightforward process to replace the housing, and change the color of your N9 if desired. The linked thread has additional links to guides and discussion of the replacement process.

Announcements

Mosh - high latency & roving IP supporting SSH bridge - for Harmattan

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Ryan Abel

Talk user "itsnotabigtruck" announced a port of Mosh (a high-latency tolerant, roaming IP SSH bridge) for Harmattan: Mosh is a new secure shell program that, unlike conventional SSH, tolerates high-latency connections and can roam between IP addresses. It uses your existing OpenSSH server to log in and initiate the connection, so you simply need to install Mosh on both the client and server to get going. This port allows you to Mosh anytime anywhere using your N9 and 3G connection! It also includes the server component, allowing you to Mosh into your N9 from your PC. Those of you in need of SSH access on the go should appreciate the improved connectivity and functionality. The application is available from the developer's MeeGo.com PPA.

Aura - video recording with realtime effects on N9 using front or rear camera

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Ryan Abel

A new video recording application, called Aura, was released last week. Developed by Xabier Rodríguez Calvar, Miguel Gomez, and Víctor Manuel Jáquez Leal the application applies real-time effects (e.g., nostalgia) to input from the front or rear camera: Basically it uses the device’s camera (either the main one or the frontal one) for video recording, as a normal camera application, but also it exposes a set of effects that can be applied, in real time, to the video stream. [...] Besides of these software effects, it is possible to add, simultaneously, another set of effects that the hardware is capable, such as sepia colors. These hardware capabilities do not impose extra processing as the software effects do. Aura is available from the Nokia Store.

Pre-release of Sociality, Facebook client, for Harmattan

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Ryan Abel

Last week, Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh released a preview of his long-in-the-works Facebook client Sociality: I've been writing sociality-mtf for quite a while, it's taking more time due to the fact that I'm writing the UI manually (no designer for MTF), and that I'm taking "breaks" every now and then from the code (uni). Currently photos, events, messages, chat, and an interface for settings are not completely implemented. It's available as a .deb from the developer's site, but given the limitations it's likely only those willing to test and report bugs should install it.

QZeeControl - control Harmattan phone using Zeemote

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Ryan Abel

Ruediger Gad announced a new Zeemote Bluetooth remote (think Wiimote) interface for Harmattan last week: QZeeControl. In a nutshell, QZeeControl enables controlling your Harmattan/MeeGo based smartphone via a Zeemote bluetooth remote control. QZeeControl is still in a very early stage and is missing some essential features like configurable key-bindings. Nonetheless, I want to announce it here and on the MeeGo forum in order to get some feedback. So far I tried it with EmuMaster and it worked quite well. The prototype release is available from the QZeeControl Garage page.
