Nokia Public Transport app now available for Harmattan

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Shown off at the 2011 Nokia World in London on Symbian and Harmattan; Nokia's Public Transport app is now finally available. Let it put detailed local public transport information at your fingertips for 460 cities in 46 countries. With just a few taps you can instantly see the routes and connections you need, how long each leg of your trip will take, and even when the next train, bus, or tram will arrive. The delay in its release for Harmattan (when it's obviously a Qt app on Symbian, and a Windows Phone version is available) is finally over.

Getting Python PySide apps into Nokia Store

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

There is much discussion about the best/easiest/quickest method of getting a python application using PySide into the Nokia Store. Attila Csipa has this to say: Unfortunately, there is no official recommendation for the time being. For me it sounds that the most feasible way is to provide patches for PySideAssistant that would then result in acceptable packages (since it claims it's building for Harmattan, I would say it's actually a bugfix. Of course, QtCreator (or even Scratchbox) could be used, but that sounds like a massive overkill to me. So, do we have a list of things PySideAssistant does wrong or required things it doesn't do? Benoît HERVIER suggested his PyPackager was the simplest route.

Replacing MeeGo Community OBS discussion meeting minutes

martin brook has posted the minutes of the discussion to replace MeeGo's Community OBS instance with one managed by the Mer project, to ensure continuation in light of MeeGo being effectively end-of-life.

Cordia HD alpha release (20120424) provides Fremantle stack for Mer

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Tomasz Sterna has announced the alpha release of Cordia HD - a port of the Hildon Desktop stack from Maemo 5 to an up-to-date distribution: On the road to running Maemo5 stack on top of GTK+ 3, the intermediary step is to get it running on latest 2.x release with all DEPRECATED features disabled. This is just happened. Source is in gitorious, and a binary image for booting x86 devices over USB is available.

Memory/swapping tweaks to "improve N9 performance"

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Danilo Luvizotto posted a script, and a binary package version of it, which tweaks a few of the Harmattan kernel's memory parameters: this is not a daemon, it is not a program that runs in background and makes your phone better. This script starts when your phone starts, changes the way the Linux kernel handles memory and exits. Yet, the effects continue. It's very simple, so it will probably work with almost any configuration you have in your phone. It does run after reboot and it is not necessary to reboot after installation. If uninstalled, it will be like if it has never been there. Your editor has installed it and suffered no ill effects, however no dramatic increase has been seen either.

NITDroid - Android for N9 - alpha 3 now available

The latest version of NITDroid is now available.

Although the installation process of alpha 2 was a little long-winded (and involved installing alpha 1 first), your editor's impressions of NITDroid on the N9 are surprisingly positive. Whilst playing with it on the N900 felt like a proof-of-concept, on the N9 it's almost viable for day-to-day use, and certainly good enough to play with porting Qt apps to Android with Necessitas.

Seagull Strike for Harmattan

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

Michael Sheldon blogs about a simple physics game he wrote named "Seagull Strike." A while back a wrote a little game for the Nokia N9 and N950, mostly as a way to explore the QML Box2D bindings. However, whilst packaging up myStatusNet client I thought I might as well release this as well since it can be a fairly enjoyable distraction. Below is a short video demonstrating how it works, and at the end of the post you can find details on where to get hold of it. If you want to try your hand at lobbing stones at flying sea birds, this may well be the game for you.
