Dual-booting the Mer-based Nemo Mobile on Nokia N950

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

Instructions for dual-booting Nemo Mobile on the N950 are available at the Mer Project wiki. The process involves extracting and flashing a specially modified file onto the device. The process is reversable and doesn't seem like it should affect your Harmattan install (although backing up is obviously recommended before you start the process). It is simple enough really. Turn the phone on like normal, be prompted with a few warnings and a standby screen featuring green text. Now, to boot into Harmattan, press the Volume Up button, to boot the Alternate OS, press the Volume Down button.

Applications

Flash Player for Firefox for N9 now available in Nokia Store

Editor: Andrew Flegg

As previously discussed, a plugin for Adobe Flash in Firefox is now available for Harmattan, for free, through the Store. It's described as: Bring the FULL web to your device with Flash Player- videos, games, apps & more. Adobe Flash Player enables a complete web browsing experience by enabling access to your favorite interactive content. Your editor had a very brief play, but with the HTML5 support and use of mobile YouTube, the usefulness of it - for me, at least - will be lower than having Flash on the N900 was.

Review of Firewall+ Pro, a call and SMS blocker for the N9

Editor: Ryan Abel

AllBoutN9 has posted a very positive review of the Firewall+ Pro call/SMS blocker for Harmattan. Firewall+ Pro by Matt Lee blocks all unwanted calls or SMS. By using blacklists or whitelists the applications knows exactly which calls or messages have to be ignored. The caller won't take a note of that - she or he gets a busy signal. Matt Lee's application comes with a big variation of options, like time based rules or a schedule mode. Check the review for more details. Firewall+ Pro is available from the Ovi Store.

Twitter petition for Skype video call on top of audio calls on N9

Editor: Ryan Abel

A new petition was started last week to attempt to convince Skype to add video calling functionality support for Harmattan. As of this writing the petition has 108 signatures. If you're interested in seeing Skype video call functionality in Harmattan be sure to sign it. Although the likelihood of much progress being made here if Skype doesn't already have something in development seems low.

Qeddit - a Reddit client for Symbian and MeeGo

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

lead-in Qeddit is a reddit client for Symbian and Meego devices. Its fast and fun! Qeddit is under the GPL v2 license. The source code of the application will soon be available at gitorious.

Development

Inception provides user access to all Harmattan Aegis permissions

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

An interesting tool has surfaced as an alternative to Harmattan open-mode to give applications access to any security features without worrying about Aegis. The Nokia N9 is an amazing piece of hardware running an amazing mobile OS. However, advanced users have often been frustrated by its sometimes-limiting Aegis security system. Aegis, like many other security frameworks, blocks many legitimate tasks beyond truly dangerous activity, and makes it difficult to customize your N9 to run on your terms. This problem is one of the past: INCEPTION allows you to assume direct control and liberate your Nokia N9's full potential. Read the full description of the tool and what it does before trying it to make sure you understand any risks that may be involved.

Remote text input using Maliit

Editor: Ryan Abel

maliit.org has posted a YouTube video demonstrating their experimental new remote text input. Video demonstrates experimental remote text input using the network transparency support recently added to Maliit. The illustrated use-case is to use your mobile device (tablet/smartphone) to act as an input device for your TV, replacing a traditional remote control. The architecture of Maliit allowed this to work without needing changes in application toolkit or input method plugin: one can use the same virtual keyboard as normally used on the mobile device, and the same application support that would be used for non-remote input.

PySide becomes a Qt add-on

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

PySide - the Python Qt binding framework - is now an official Qt add-on. Being a Qt Add-on provides PySide a permanent home and perfect alignment with Qt Frameworks. Furthermore, the project gets improved visibility, as well as a simple, carefully thought out meritocratic project structure. In addition to the wiki that is already hosted by Qt, the PySide mailing list and the bug tracker are also now hosted by Qt. More information on the Qt Project can be found on the project web site.

Embedding microb browser in your N900 app

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Jonathan Wilson has completed a challenge he set out on a few months ago: embedding a Fremantle browser instance in an app: Thanks to a nice person at Nokia who published Fremantle sources for tablet-browser-daemon and browser-neteal, we now have the 100% correct browser-neteal-dev package required to embed the browser view in your app just like Nokia did with microb, tutorial-home-applet and other things.

This is what you need to know in order to embed the microb browser view widget (which in turn talks to the browser daemon just like microb does) in your app. This provides a far simpler way to embed a fully-featured browser in a Maemo app than any of the alternatives.

Reuters adds to rumours Nokia Meltemi

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Stefan Constantinescu writes of a new Reuters article discussing Nokia's fortunes, including at the low-end: Nokia has also been working on a new Linux-based software platform, code-named Meltemi, to replace its Series 40 software in more advanced feature phones, industry sources told Reuters.

The Series 40 platform has been used in more cellphones than any other software, reaching a cumulative total of 1.5 billion units a few months ago. Meltemi would enable a more smartphone-like experience on those simpler models.

Nothing exactly new, but good to see further discussion. However, your editor would note that the Reuters article quotes unnamed "industry sources", making claims of a "confirmation" a little strong. However, Meltemi's existence isn't really in doubt. The questions are: when will we see it; will it continue the Maemo heritage and will the devices be interesting to smartphone-toting tastes, as well as the low end?

Harmattan Bugzilla closed for new bugs

Editor: jaffa

The N9 Developer blog posted some news which was both unsurprising and surprising at the same time: In November 2011, we opened a public Bugzilla to interact with the N9 user community and receive end user bug reports and enhancement requests. To this date, we have received over 1100 bug reports. We thank you for the active contribution.

At this point of the product lifecycle, we have identified the major issues to be addressed in the upcoming software updates beyond the PR1.2 release. While we will continue to address issues already reported, we are unable to accept any new requests in Bugzilla.

Reaction in the comments on the blog post has not been positive; particularly citing the immediate nature of the closing, rather than giving a grace period. It's claimed this doesn't affect Nokia's ongoing support, but it is just one of the signs that Nokia is continuing to wind down its Harmattan operations, with (in your editor's opinion) but a handful of people left by the end of the year.

Decrypting N900 backups without a device

Editor: jaffa

Jonathan Wilson has posted instructions for decrypting Maemo 5 backups without a working N900: Thanks to Pali Rohár finding some old osso-backup source [...], I was able to build a tool that decrypts encrypted osso-backup files without the need to have a working N900 Fremantle install. Source is also provided.

Announcements

Mahjong Solitaire for N9

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

A version of the popular game "Mahjong" is available in the Nokia Store. So far, comments in the Nokia Store have been really positive -although some people seem to miss the classic theme from the Mahjongs available back in Maemo. But not only the comments are positive: the application is currently listed in the first position of the Top Free games! In your editor's testing I agree that another theme would be a welcome addition, but other than that it is a very fun and well done game.

Alpha release of KhtSimpleText text editor should be available soon

Editor: Andrew Flegg

If Benoît HERVIER's KhtEditor is too complex for your needs, his new project - KhtSimpleText may do the job: First Alpha Release of KhtSimpleText should be available soon. Benoît will be publishing it in the MeeGo Community OBS, making it available via apps.formeego.org.
