Nokia closes down more software development

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Meltemi, the not-so-secret, low-end, Linux-based, Qt-running platform for the "next billion" is just one of several casualties of Nokia's final confirmation of them as - more or less - a Microsoft OEM. Ars Technica's Ryan Paul wrote: Embattled phone manufacturer Nokia has conducted another round of layoffs, reducing the company’s headcount by 10,000 employees. The company is tightening its focus and making deep cuts in areas that aren’t directly tied to its current Windows Phone strategy. In conjunction with the layoffs, Nokia has also reportedly terminated its Meltemi project. [...]

The phone giant’s platform strategy has been moving away from Linux ever since former Microsoft executive Stephen Elop took over as Nokia’s CEO. He transitioned the company to the Windows Phone 7 operating system, ended Nokia’s commitment to the Linux-based MeeGo operating system, and vowed to eventually phase out its legacy Symbian platform.

Unless Qt is brought to S40 (which is not outside the realms of possibility, but seems unlikely), Nokia does not seem to have any future technologies which provide a sensible follow on to Maemo and MeeGo users & developers.

On the day of the announcement, your editor attended a "BlackBerry 10 Developer Jam" in London. The work BlackBerry is putting into their Qt-based BB10 OS is impressive and, like Nokia before Elop, their Qt strategy *must* succeed. It certainly felt like BB10 would be the natural successor to Harmattan and the N9 for both users and application developers. RIM is a company who are regarded to have lost the confidence of purchasers, though. Nokia was in a similar position on February 2011 - until Elop's famous "Burning Platforms" memo flushed all revenue streams down the toilet for a year. Hopefully, RIM's management won't mismanage their challenges as Nokia's leadership team did.

Nokia lay-offs may include maemo.org resources & budget

In a thread on Nokia's share price, Quim Gil posted, in two separate messages: There goes as well the budget for funding maemo.org and paying the salaries of whoever has still a relationship with this community (Qt Project to follow, although there Nokia still keeps the support for the short term while looking for a way forward like a spin-off or the sale of the Qt asset). It's a decision made. The current situation and future trends of the Nokia stock, Lumia & Asha sales etc will have no influence on this decision.

No need to panic because as you see someone is working at the Nokia side and as you see you are getting the status update and details as soon as possible. About the details of the infrastructure and what would it take to bring it forward, Nemein knows. Henri Bergius (bergie) will be at the Qt Contributors Summit (June 21 - 23). In the meantime I expect more details about the future to be defined in the following days and weeks.

Want to contribute to Android port to N9? Help needed with compass

NITDroid maintainer, e-yes, has asked if anyone would be willing to contribute with the implementation of some aspects of the port: I've created basic implementation of Magnetic Field sensor (compass) for Nokia N9. Some applications even able to use it (e.g Smart Compass from Play.Store). However, most applications fail to use compass HAL. Reasons: 1) raw values reported by driver are out-of-range (or smth like that). 2) lack of calibration (I suppose we need to do some sort of matrix transform on data in HAL).

Any one willing to contribute, feel free to start with this relatively easy task.

Minutes from June 8th Maemo Community Council meeting

Craig Woodward has published the minutes of the latest council meeting. Topics included: community awards, council introduction blog post, package movement, IRC chanops for council members. The increase in transparency of the new council is good to see. Hopefully future meetings will be advertised on the council blog ahead of time, to allow other interested parties to attend.

The Ubuntu App Showdown features Nokia N9s as prizes

Via: @GeneralAntilles

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Ubuntu is holding a developer competition, in which the prizes include Nokia N9s. The "App Showdown" is an app development competition where you can win awesome prizes. You’ve got 3 weeks to develop a cool app using Quickly and submit it packaged to MyApps. At the end of the contest, a jury will vote and the winners for the Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes will be announced. There will be an additional community vote with extra prizes. Prizes are cool hardware provided by our friends at System76 and Nokia. Any toolkit or technology can be used, by Ubuntu is using this to promote the "Quickly" RAD tool.

Post social network statuses from Harmattan status menu

Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has launched a project, inspired by an iOS6 feature: Quick status updates is a status menu plugin that allows you to post Facebook and Twitter status updates from the status menu (not many statuses there ;-)) Inception or an Open Mode kernel is required to install unrestrictred-system-ui.

MT-Toggles - status menu toggle framework for Harmattan

mohammad7410 has announced another project for the N9(50) status menu: the inclusion of a "toggles" framework, similar to has been seen on Android: MT-Toggles is a toggles platform for Harmattan. After installing it, you can install extra toggles (the base package comes with no toggles) that'll show up in it. Please be cautious with MT-Toggles, the toggles I've provided below have been tested for a week, and they haven't caused any problems, a faulty toggle can segfault the status menu, 3 quick segfaults in a row and you'll get a MALF that you'll have to fix manually, so please, keep backups. [...] You'll need to install actual toggles, some of which require inception/open mode. Inception or an Open Mode kernel is required to install unrestrictred-system-ui.
