Open source replacement for Maemo Fremantle bluetooth-sysinfo package

Via: @jaffa2

Jonathan Wilson has made available a package I call bt-cal which is a replacement for bluetooth-sysinfo as a way to read the bluetooth MAC address from CAL and send it to the bluetooth driver. [...] The ultimate aim is that someone will modify this and make it talk to something more standard than the /sys/devices/platform/hci_h4p/hwaddr that it talks to now (allowing the non-standard interface to be removed from kernel-power/kernel-cssu/whatever).

Eager Maemo, MeeGo and Mer developers are encouraged to further hack on Jonathan's work.

Applications

Problems updating Dropian from Nokia Store?

Via: @jaffa2

If you are having problems updating Dropian the author, Bojan Komljenovic, and Nokia Store staff would appreciate some help in trying to narrow it down: If you have a problem downloading #Dropian from Store, help us and Store staff debug it by providing details: 1. Nokia model 2. Exact Error Message 3. Screen shot 4. Country/Network Operator 5. Device language 6. Connection Type 7. Phone Browser used

Bojan shares his email address in the third tweet if you can help.

unrestricted-system-ui for Harmattan updated with safe mode and LED support

Via: @GeneralAntilles

Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has updated his extensible rebuild of the Harmattan system menu: Features:

* Safe mode, when sysuid segfaults or aborts, it restarts in safe mode (all plugins except stock disabled), this gives you a chance to fix/remove whatever you had installed (killall -11 sysuid to test, for fun)

* Merged arcean's LED support, install control panel applet using apt-get install duicontrolpanel-ledapplet.

To upgrade, reinstall using instructions in the wiki, just rm system-ui* before running any wget commands.

unrestricted-system-ui requires Inception or open mode to install and caution may be called for due to the low-level nature of the package.

Development

Documenting N900 D-Bus interfaces

Via: @jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Jonathan Wilson has continued his reverse engineering, documenting and unpicking the closed source internals of Fremantle by creating a Wiki post to document the known Nokia-specific dbus interfaces used on the N900. [...] Let me know if you have any feedback on the page or if you have anything to

Kickstarter campaign launched for new MetaWatch Strata

Via: @GeneralAntilles

Editor: Andrew Flegg

One of your editors is very keen on the existing MetaWatch and using this with Javier S. Pedro's daemon on Harmattan. So it's sensible he's excited by the new KickStarter project for the latest model: Strata, is a smart sportwatch designed to compliment your smartphone and give you Hands Freedom™. With a Bluetooth 4.0 connection to your iPhone 4s or Android smartphone, you can check messages, see who’s calling, control music, view weather, and more, all from your wrist. Of course, our interest is predicated on the Bluetooth protocol being documented and usable from other systems. They say "all of our software is open sourced [...] so everyone can see how easy it is to connect from an app on a smartphone or any other device."

gPodder updates for Nokia N9 Harmattan

Via: @jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

Thomas Perl announced he has packaged and released gPodder for Harmattan. Highlights of 3.2.0 are an improved UI (e.g. cover art in the "All episodes" list) and Flattr integration, so you can now support podcast authors via micropayments (you'll find the Flattr button below the shownotes for podcasts that publish a Flattr URL). There was a packaging issue that may have lead users upgrading to 3.2.0 to see a failure, but it was quickly caught and fixed in 3.2.1

Socialty Facebook client updated

Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh's social network client, Socialty, has been updated to v0.4.x. Features include: Added basic animations to make Sociality a better looking experience; Fixed "<3" statuses breaking checkin tags; YouTube links can now be opened in internal media player; Allow albums of other users to be opened by tapping profile picture; Group posts now open up individually, rather than the whole group page; Tapping a photo link in the news feed opens the photo in Sociality.

The first post in the thread links to a binary package and the gitorious source. Existing users should be notified automatically, but can also do "About > Check for Updates".

Orientation lock toggle plugin for the MT-Toggles statusbar add-on

Via: @GeneralAntilles

Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh has released another plugin for his Harmattan toggles framework: Tap it to switch between portrait/landscape, long press for automatic orientation.

The plugin uses one of your editors' original Fremantle CSSU orientation lock icons. It also requires unrestricted-system-ui.
