Management not-for-profit board and Community Council nomination period closes

Editor: Andrew Flegg

The nomination period for the two concurrent elections have closed. The new "not-for-profit" organisation which will take over community ownership duties from Nokia has had six candidates declare their intention to stand:

* Randall Arnold

* Niel Nielsen

* Ivan Galvez Junquera

* Joerg Reisenweber

* Tim Samoff

* Craig Woodward.

There are three candidates for the Community Council, so they could replace the current council without the need for an election:

* Niel Nielsen

* Ivan Galvez Junquera

* Joerg Reisenweber

Si Howard is also standing for both bodies, but does not currently have a sufficient karma score; so is ineligible.

Aapo Rantalainen has posted to Extras-devel a port of "Dooble", which is a browser targetting extensibility and privacy.

Development

Recreating Maemo 5 SDK virtual image development environment

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Thomas Perl has documented his experience in getting a lightweight virtual machine up and running for SSH-based Scratchbox development: I've somehow lost my good old "MaemoSDK" VirtualBox VM, so while I'm setting up the new VM, here are the instructions in case I or somebody else needs to do that again. The goal: To have a nice VM (more lightweight than the Maemo SDK VMs offered online) that one can SSH into and build packages for Maemo 4 and Maemo 5. Thomas' methods describe the steps for Maemo 5, that is the Fremantle SDK, but also describe the subsitutions to target Diablo (aka Maemo 4) as well. Your editor's environment has also bitrotted over the years, so this is a timely guide.

Getting web2py apps working on Android devices

Via: @Jaffa2

Fred Pacquier has posted an update to his series on using Python web apps to have a seamless upgrade experience across devices. Starting on PDAs, he moved through the Maemo devices until he regretfully and reluctantly switched to an Android phone, the Samsung Galaxy Note. From the looks of this thread on TMO, I’m not the only one. I guess my opinion about the system is similar to that of most former N900 users.

Joerg Reisenweber has been nominated to stand in the upcoming Maemo Community Council elections by Ivan Galvez Junquera, and he has accepted: since I'm short of time right now (alas this won't change for whole term, I promise), I just like to post a "I accept" here, since ivgalvez pushed me by mentioning there's only 5h left to do so.

Plus I add a self-nomination for board, since I think there's much of synergy to be exploited and board is the more enjoyable position in my book anyway.

Joerg has been very prominent in curating an on-topic experience on IRC, facilitating the ongoing activities of the community (such as the Maemo 5 CSSU) and has been active on the mailing lists and TMO.

Woody14619 running for Hildon Foundation Board

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Craig Woodward has declared his candidacy for the board of the new not-for-profit "Hildon Foundation" organisation which is taking over the community "ownership" from Nokia: During my last run for Council, my stated intention was to increase the visibility and transparency of the operation of Council. During my term, I saw to it that there were weekly open meetings with minutes presented to the community on the Council blog (usually in a timely fashion). I also got involved in a number of other activities that were Council and community related, and hope that those efforts have been (and will continue to be) seen as positive steps taken to help the community.

In your editor's opinion, Craig has been the most active, visible and consistent member of the council in the past term; bringing a professionalism and transparency which has been lacking for the past few terms.

Ivan Galvez Junquera is another member of the outgoing Community Council who is running for the board, and also looking to be re-elected to the Council: As current Council Member, I feel that I have the responsibility to help finishing the transition process to a self sustained NFP entity that we have started. I am one of the three signers in the articles of incorporation, with Woody14619 and SD69, and I think that I should help in the first steps of foundation as an independent entity.

Announcements

gPodder updates for Maemo and MeeGo

Via: @Jaffa2

Thomas Perl has updated the v2.x and v3.x gPodder versions for Maemo and MeeGo respectively: The reason why another 2.x release comes out at this point in time is because YouTube downloading was broken by another website change recently, and of course we don't want to leave our good old Maemo users without their daily YouTube video fix. A full list of changes for Maemo 4 and 5 can be found in the 2.20.2 release announcement.

Version 3.3.0 for MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan brings some nice features like download resuming, filters for unfinished files, scroll position improvements and display of the publish date and file size in the shownotes. Of course, 3.3.0 also includes the YouTube download fix. A full list of changes can be found in the 3.3.0 release annoucement.

Maemo 4 users can find the updated version in Extras; Maemo 5 users can find it in Extras-testing (it's awaiting promotion to Extras at the moment). N950 and N9 users can find it at apps.formeego.org or wait for it to pass through Nokia QA.

Gallery plugins for Nokia N9 for visual effects

Via: @Jaffa2

Last week Simón Pena Placer announced the arrival of 3 new gallery plugins for Harmattan to the Nokia Store: The Enlarge & Shrink plugin is an add-on to the built-in Gallery application. You can use it to apply a radial distortion to a picture, so they look like enlarge and shrink effects (also known as punch or pinch). The Face Recognition Reset plugin also behaves as an add-on, but doesn't work on individual images. Instead, it forces the deletion or un/protection of the facerecognition database, something that you might need if for whatever reason the database gets corrupted.

And finally, the Tilt Shift plugin lets you make a picture look as a miniature, by applying the following transformations: Blurring the image using a Gaussian Blur filter; Keep an area of the image focused (either vertically or horizontally); Combine both parts of the image using a Gaussian filter (so the focus is lost gradually from the focused area to the rest of the image); Increase the saturation, so the colors seems those of a miniature.

The plugins are available for free from the Nokia Store.

BackupMenu comes to N9 and N950 (open mode required)

Via: @theshopkeepr

Editor: Ryan Abel

A new update to Rob Simpson BackupMenu utility by Talk user "farfary" brings support for the N9 and N950. BackupMenu allows users to do full backup and restore of the rootfs, home folder, and nitdroid install, and supports backing up to or from USB mass storage.

(The permanent) open mode is required to install MultiBoot and the BackupMenu, so BackupMenu should only be installed if you're willing to give up closed mode.

Instago: Instagram viewer for Harmattan

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Dirk Songuer has scratched an itch, by producing an Instagram viewer for Harmattan. Instagram is a social network focusing on the sharing of photos, and Dirk writes that while I do love my N9 I do miss a couple of applications for it. Some became available since (hi wazzap), but I still miss Instagram for example. Yeah, I know about Molome (and use it actually), but I still prefer Instagrams clean interface and community aspect. So I finally started working on a client myself. It’s called “Instago” and to get right to the elephant in the room: Yes, it’s a simple viewer at the moment. And no, I’m not going to reverse engineer posting images to Instagram nor will I try.

The app is open source, and binary packages are also available; along with a development blog.
