Software update coming for N950 to more closely align with N9 Harmattan release

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Nokia's "N9 developer" blog shared the interesting news that the N9 team is in the final stages of preparing an update to the Nokia N950 image, which will align the software more with the Nokia N9 product image.

No clarification as to when the release could be expected (beyond "soon") was given; however it will be an in-place, SSU-style, upgrade if the device has already been reflashed with the beta2 firmware.

Applications

MyMoves - gesture control for Harmattan - available in Nokia Store

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Topi Santakivi's MyMoves application is now available in the Nokia Store for the N9 and N950. The app allows opening applications using multitouch gestures. It currently works in Nokia Harmattan phones (N9/N950). There are 12 gestures to choose from, 6 of which are two-finger and 6 three-finger gestures. [...] For each available gesture, you select an application you want to launch, and then using that gesture anywhere in the system will open up the application you selected. MyMoves also recognizes if you do a pinch gesture, and stays out of the way of normal phone usage.

There are a good number of introductory videos and walkthroughs on Topi's blog.

ClipMan, clipboard manager, is now available for Harmattan

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Michael Muth has shared the news that his clipboard manager application is now available for Nokia N950s and N9s. Describing the new release, he said it looks quite different compared to the MeeGo Tablet user interface and you're right, I had to do the whole UI from scratch. There are two versions, both available from the Nokia Store.

Technical information on Harmattan browser

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Nokia have published a large amount of information on "Nokia Browser 8.5", the name - it seems - for the WebKit-based browser shipped as standard on Harmattan.

The information includes user agents, capabilities and how to specify the icons which appear in the launcher when a user presses "Add to apps":

Nokia Browser 8.5 is the first Nokia browser available for the Linux-based MeeGo platform. It represents a major update and significant departure from prior Nokia browsers. Based on an updated WebKit2-based rendering engine, Browser 8.5 achieves a high level of support for HTML5, CSS3, and other important web standards such as geolocation and browser-based storage. Browser 8.5 features a clean, uncluttered interface that facilitates deployment of cross-browser web-based applications alongside native applications within the Nokia N9's home screen.

Packages for Python on Harmattan updated

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

The announcement says it all: We have just updated the Python packages for the N9. This release updates PySide: Python for Qt to the latest stable version, 1.0.7. In addition to PySide, the Platform API bindings have received various bug fixes and have been rebuilt with the latest PySide toolchain Python applications are eligible for Nokia Store submission as well.

Developer outreach blog from N9 and N950 developer offering team

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

As our front page story showed, Nokia's MeeGo team have launched a blog to better communicate with N9/N950 developers. The blog will share information straight from the source and bridges the gap between the MeeGo Developer Offering team and the developer community itself. This is a multi-author blog by the team that is involved with the daily work of creating and improving the developer offering for the Nokia N9 device.

The most important task of the blog is to announce updates to tools, documentation and device images. But this blog will be more than just a glorified news ticker. In future posts we plan to highlight individual development tools, device features (and the corresponding programming interfaces), best practices and such. We may also invite guest authors to cover topics that particularly interest them and you.

First "real" Qt app available for Android, MeeGo and Symbian (no Maemo?)

Via: @Jaffa2

Tam Hanna has quoted a press release talking about the first useful application available across three different Qt platforms: Nokia’s Qt platform is available for Android, MeeGo and Symbian. So far, quite a few apps were released for Symbian and MeeGo – but none was available which spanned all three mobile platforms. This has now changed, with a free proof of concept app being released.

First alpha release of Cordia HD available

Cordia HD, a port of Maemo's Hildon Desktop to a Mer base, has had its first alpha release earlier today. In the short annoncement, Tomasz Sterna said: It is my pleasure to present you the first Mer-based alpha release of Cordia HD. Get it [...] and tell how do you like it.

Minutes from Maemo community meeting

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

A last minute meeting was organised by the new Maemo Community Council which touched on a number of topics. Momcilo Majic shared the meeting minutes & log: Unfortunately we had to skip topics #5 and #6 - the meeting was longer than expected. There was also interest from the CSSU project. Unfortunately by that time most of participants were not available. I hope we can include that for the next meeting as well.

The main topics covered were: MeeGo coding competition voting; maemo.org future - DNS/infrastructure/...; talk.maemo.org issues; (unpaid) volunteers for maemo.org administration; Mer.

Poll to rename MeeGo Community Edition (as part of move to base on Mer) open

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

Carsten Munk announced that going forward the MeeGo Community Edition (MeeGo CE) is going to need a new name as it will be based on Mer. We (as in the steering group) like to query the community for ideas on what to call the Community Edition in the future. Currently our splash screens says MeeGo 1.3 Community Edition which will be increasingily inaccurate as we're working to rebase CE on top of the Mer Core.

There is a poll containing nearly 100 suggested names and includes a spot for new proposals. It looks like the community has its work cut out for it choosing a new name.

Scope/breadth of Mer

Via: @Jaffa2

Carsten Munk has clarified the aims of the Mer Project and why concentrating on a Core-only approach makes sense:

1) It was seen in MeeGo that reference UX'es got preferential treatment in the core, subverting any process, especially when it came to big reveals - which caused the total breakdown of a open and working requirements process.

2) We want to move much of the politics out of the Mer project and motivate people to create and build their own projects, though basing

Carsten goes on to clarify that he's expecting most users of Mer will be small/medium-sized vendors who want to rapidly build Qt-based devices for, for example, vertical markets.

Konttori's thoughts on past few months in the Harmattan team

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Urho Konttori, a Maemo contributor from the 770 days who got snapped up by Nokia, has shared his thoughts on the last few months, touching upon Gary Birkett's death; the planned updates for Harmattan and the delays to the sales' start: It's hard to put into words the feelings we have been having during the late summer/early autumn time. Software has been complete since summer, but some surprise issues had been helding the sales start for some time.

Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for Urho's career, he's moving on to the Windows Phone groups in Nokia and, in particular, more the hardware rather than the software. This has given him an insight into the hardware which may be coming in 2013/2014 - and he's excited.

IdeasProject for Nokia N9 challenges for ideas to improve Swipe UI

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Flegg

Nokia has launched an "N9 challenge" on their IdeasProject brainstorming site. If you give your feedback on the Nokia N9 user interface - in particular ideas to improve the key features described below. We are also interested in hearing your innovative ideas for the next generation of mobile touch screen devices. The top 10 ideas will be rewarded with a Nokia N9 each!

The challenge ends on 15th November. There are already a large number of contributions, ranging from the spamming/missing the point (for example, "IRDA port" and "international clock") through to the interesting (for example, "swipes from centre to send/download content"). Unfortunately, there are a large number of one-word/line entries which fit into the former category.

SketchIt - simple sketching for Harmattan devices

Via: @Jaffa2

Editor: Andrew Olmsted

Tomasz Pieniazek announced SketchIt in the MeeGo.com forums this week. SketchIt brings the simple drawing tool for the Harmattan devices. Now you can draw wherever you go and also kids will have a lot of fun The screenshots in the thread show some of the capabilities, but the file is a zip you have to download and install - hopefully it will make it into a repository at some point.
